Abano Terme

The name Abano derives from the Latin word “Aponos” which means “it takes pain away”.
The legend tells that the waters of Aponos became hot when Phaeton, the Sun’s son, fell into to them when Jupiter threw a light against him to punish him because he had driven badly his father’s chariot.

Abano Terme, zona pedonale

According to the Roman tradition, the waters were dedicated to a Healing Goddess, the Lady of Nature who determines the flow of life. According to the sources her first name was Retia, but she was better known as Igea.

Abano Terme is the largest and most ancient spa centre of Europe. Archaeological excavations proves the area was inhabited by a Paleo-Venetian population long ago.

Nowadays, like 2000 years ago, Abano spas are surrounded by the greenery of the Eugeanean Hills. There are no polluting industries, only natural energy. Even the heating comes from the hearth of the Earth.

Antiche Terme Montirone

Thermal water springs at 87° C and it provides all the energy necessary to heat the thermal centres and the swimming-pools of more than 100 hotels of the area. That is why the thermal tourist season lasts all year round.
Here we have the culture of hospitality that is handed down from father to son, and is also a characteristic of the population who has always been used to welcome tourists.
